Todd Krupa, MA, MPSL

Todd Krupa is a high-reliability and patient safety expert who develops evidence-based content and facilitates comprehensive application of error-science principles, strategies and tactics for health care leaders, physicians, clinical and non-clinical staff in an effort to reduce preventable harm to patients and those who care for them. Krupa spent several years as an independent consultant and joined Safe & Reliable Healthcare in March 2019.

As director of patient safety at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, N.C., Krupa was responsible for the overall strategic design and implementation of its transformation to a culture of high reliability and patient safety, including staff and physician education, building leadership infrastructures for high reliability, developing stronger incident reporting environments, building an interdisciplinary cause analysis approach with measurable process improvement efforts, and creating frameworks for fair outcomes to events. He also was a national leader and former educator for culture transformation in the Children's Hospitals Solutions for Patient Safety collaborative, a group of more than 100 facilities teaming to eliminate harm in children's hospitals. He has spoken at national and international conferences on patient-safety and high-reliability related topics, including culture change, leadership, education, sustainment and coaching, event analysis, fair outcomes for mistakes, communication and more. He's a certified TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer.

He previously was a patient safety manager at Novant Health and supported patient safety efforts as an internal communication consultant at Sentara Healthcare. Krupa also spent time managing a public affairs program at NASA's Langley Research Center. He was the communication officer for information technology at the University of Missouri and has extensive experience in crisis communication. Additionally, he has worked in numerous capacities at daily newspapers in cities including Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Fort Wayne, Ind., Columbia, Mo. and Winston-Salem, N.C.

Krupa has undergraduate degrees in communication and history from the University of Scranton (Pa.) and master's degrees in journalism from the University of Missouri and patient safety leadership from the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
